Let’s address the elephant in the room here. Other than the fact that this may or may not have been the most boring game in NHL playoff history, this was classic letdown city by the Penguins. Coming off the high of another huge series victory over the Caps, Pittsburgh looked flat in Game 1. Things like this happen. It’s not the end of the world, but at the same time, it certainly isn’t great to give Ottawa at least one game on home-ice.
If it weren’t for a few unlucky bounces here and there, the Penguins probably come out with the victory in this one. Then again, when you go 0 for 5 on the power play, you probably deserve to lose. Going 0-for on the power play in the playoffs is simply unacceptable. Ottawa basically tried giving this one away to Pittsburgh, and the Penguins were all like, “Na, it’s cool. You take this one. Let’s make it a series.” So let’s not get our panties in a bunch over this one. It’s only one game. Mike Sullivan will go back into his lab and draft up a few adjustments on the line combinations and the Penguins will come out better in Game 2 tomorrow night.
P.S. – The Penguins did the exact same thing last year in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Lightning. And the Lightning happened to be a MUCH better team than the Senators. No tight butthole here. I still say Pens in 5.
