Just absolutely fucking awesome. I’m so excited about this right now I’ve got chills running down my spine as I type this. Look, I don’t care what team you root for, if this kid’s story doesn’t inspire you then you’ve got a big dump in your pants.
Two years ago, James Conner was at the pinnacle of his college career. He was coming off his sophomore season where he rushed for 1,765 yards and 26 TDs, earning the title of ACC Player of the Year. Then, his world came to screeching halt. His junior year ended just one game into the season due to an MCL tear, but that was the least of his worries in 2015. A few months later, Conner was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The former ACC Player of the Year saw his football career, and life, flash before his very eyes. But Conner would go on to eventually kick cancer’s ass and return for his senior season only a few months after undergoing his last chemotherapy treatment. Sure, his numbers dipped a little from his 2014 season (1,092 yards and 16 TDs), but even Conner admitted that he was probably playing at about 60% to begin the season. He looked better and better as the season went on, most notably rushing for 189 yards and 2 TDs in Pitt’s upset win over Clemson.
Now, Conner will be moving to the other side of the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex to dawn the black and gold instead of the blue and gold. Although it looks like the DeAngelo Williams era is over in Pittsburgh, I couldn’t be happier to watch Conner compliment Le’Veon Bell as a lethal one-two punch in the Steelers’ backfield. Tears of happiness all around.
P.S. – How fucking cool is this phone call? Never have I ever been more excited for a third round draft pick in my life.
