Quick recap of week #2 of the 2017 season:
- Monday through Thursday – they get their asses swept by the Reds (and Red Sox to be official).
- Friday through Sunday – they sweep the defending World Series Champs at Wrigley.
Can somebody please tell me why this team makes any goddamn sense? Through the first two weeks of the 2017 season, the Pirates have not finished a series without either sweeping or being swept.
They either play like world beaters or they forget all the simple fundamentals of baseball like pitching, hitting, and getting from first to second base. You never know what you’re going to get with this team. With that said, I’m totally okay if they decide to play like they did against the Cubs this past weekend. Last year, the Buccos finished up 4-14-1 against the Cubs, going 1-8 at Wrigley. I’m no mathematician, but if my arithmetic is correct here, the Buccos are 3/4 of the way there to matching their 2016 wins total versus the best team in baseball. Perhaps they can get to 5 wins this year?
Up next, the Pirates take on the Cards in St. Louis for a 3-game series before heading home to PNC Park to take on the Yankees for another 3-game series over the weekend. If all goes according to plan, the Cardinals (3-9, last place in the NL Central) will kick the shit out of the Buccos for three straight games before Bill Mazeroski comes out of retirement to break Yankees’ fans hearts in a 1960 World Series rematch.
