I gotta be perfectly honest. I had no clue who Ron Hainsey was before this trade today. Those who say otherwise are straight up hockey nerds.

This acquisition doesn’t come as a surprise as the Penguins’ defensemen have been dropping like flies lately. Trevor Daley is going to be out at least six weeks after undergoing knee surgery, Olli Maatta is out six weeks as well after undergoing hand surgery, Justin Shultz has been out since last week with an upper body injury to his brain, and Kris Letang is currently day-to-day with his own upper body injury. It was only a matter of time before Jim Rutherford was going to pull the trigger on adding another defenseman (or at least one that he’s already acquired before in Carolina) to increase the Pens’ blue line depth. And it’s also not like the Pens can’t use a big guy (6’3″, 210 lbs) on defense right now. They currently rank 21st in the league in penalty killing. Not the best stat to have if you’re trying to win the Stanley Cup. The 35-year old, Hainsey, has led the Canes this year in hits (79) and was third in blocked shots (92). He’s not going to make anyone’s dick hard in Pittsburgh, but he should be a good stopgap until the rest of the defense gets healthy again.

UPDATE: Anybody that has a sandwich named after them is cool in my book (even though this looks like just your average run of the mill chicken sandwich with bacon). Welcome to the Burgh, Ronster!
