Last week, I went on a little rant after I started getting sick of reading other hot takes about Antonio Brown’s Facebook Live incident. Specifically, I got annoyed after reading Jerry Thornton’s blog from Barstool Sports (no affiliation with that company, unfortunately). Thornton made a point that if it were Chris Hogan that had done the same thing as Antonio Brown did, that Belechick would’ve vaporized Hogan from the organization. Yours truly had the following to say about that comparison:
“…Jerry Thornton needs to pump the fucking breaks a minute when he is trying to compare what Antonio Brown did, to say, if Chris Hogan did the same thing. Antonio Brown is arguably the best wide receiver in football right now. Chris Hogan is like the 3rd or 4th receiver on the Patriots. He’s only relevant because he plays on the Patriots. You’d have no idea the guy even existed if he played on literally any other football team.”
Alright, so I’m half right about my take here. Chris Hogan went off for 180 yards and two touchdowns against the Steelers last night making me look like a fucking moron that sits in his underwear and writes hot takes on a biased Pittsburgh sports blog (which is true minus the fact that I’m usually fully clothed). In fact, Hogan had one of the most dominant playoff performances by a wide receiver ever, even breaking the Patriots postseason record for most receiving yards in a game. It not only pained me to watch last night as Hogan and the Patriots dismantled the Steelers like they were the fucking Cleveland Browns, but it made me look like an even bigger derp as Antonio Brown (see the rest of my stellar analysis above) was held scoreless to a pedestrian 7 catches for 77 yards. One might look at that stat line and say that’s a pretty decent game for a receiver. Well, that’s actually a below average game for a guy who finished the year with 106 receptions (2nd), 1,284 yards (5th), and 12 touchdowns (T-2nd). And those numbers don’t reflect the fact that Brown played a game and a half with a garbage can for a quarterback (aka Landry Jones).
I admit that I’m wrong that Chris Hogan can’t put up the same types of numbers AB does. Case in point last night. HOWEVER, if you put this dude on literally any other NFL team there is a 0% probability that he’d ever put up these types of numbers again. Bill Belichick has made it a career out of getting guys like Hogan to fit his system and play way above their potential (CC: Wes Welker and Julian Edelman). That’s part of the reason the Patriots have been so successful and have been to like 23 Super Bowls in the last 15 years. Belechick is the real genius here. No other coach/GM in the league can figure out how to take a former college lacrosse player turned wide receiver into a success. In fact, I’m positive there wasn’t one other GM in the league that looked at Chris Hogan’s stats with the Bills after the 2015 season (450 yards and 2 TDs) and thought to themselves, “Damn, this scrappy white guy is a ‘burner.’ Let’s throw a $12 million offer sheet at him!” Only fucking evil Bill Belichick. I guess haters like me are gonna hate. Go Falcons!
